God is love.  We ought to love.  God demonstrates love to us in coming to us as Jesus Christ for our sin.  This love is perfect.  It is complete.  There is nothing for us to do to help or even participate in its completion.  Jesus completes it for us.  This is how John explains perfect love takes away fear.  In what Jesus has done, we need not be insecure.  We need only believe in Jesus.  This leads to us abiding with Jesus.  Abide simply means to “hang out” with Jesus.  When we hang out with Jesus, we love others.  We love because God first loved us.  To love is to know God.

2012 Easter Series: God Is Love
1 John 4:7-21
John 15:4-5
(Acts 8:26-40)

In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. – 1 John 4:10

Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.  – John 15:4-5

As they were going along the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water! What is to prevent me from being baptized?”...When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away; the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing. – Acts 8:36, 39
